Canada Needs Tradespeople – Here’s How You Can Qualify for Permanent Residency
By Radmila Lim, RCIC (R414423) — Lawseph & Associates Inc.
What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program?
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is one of the three federal immigration pathways under Canada’s Express Entry system. It is designed specifically for skilled workers who have qualifications and work experience in a recognized trade. Unlike other immigration programs, the FSTP focuses on practical, hands-on occupations rather than academic or managerial positions.
What the FSTP is Not
The FSTP is not for professionals in fields such as IT, finance, law, or healthcare that typically fall under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). It is also not the same as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which is administered by provinces and territories with their own criteria. Instead, the FSTP is a federal program targeted at tradespeople who can fill critical labor shortages across Canada.
FSTP vs. Other Immigration Pathways
- FSTP: For tradespeople (e.g., electricians, welders, plumbers, chefs, butchers).
- FSWP: For skilled professionals with education, work experience, and language proficiency.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For applicants with Canadian work experience.
- PNP: Province-specific nomination programs that may overlap with trade occupations but have local eligibility requirements.
Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years.
- A valid job offer of at least 1 year in Canada OR a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian province/territory.
- Meet minimum language requirements (CLB 5 for speaking/listening, CLB 4 for reading/writing).
- Meet admissibility requirements (criminal, medical, and background checks).
